Academics at The Legacy Community School

At The Legacy Community School, we believe that learning should be both challenging and enjoyable. We strive to provide students with joyful and rigorous learning experiences that foster curiosity and exploration of the world around us. At TLCS, we flip the traditional classroom on its head and provide a truly student-centered learning environment. Students receive direct instruction in a small group setting and then spend the majority of their class periods applying the knowledge and skills with the goal of reaching mastery. Instead of memorization, we emphasize mastery of grade level competencies and the transfer of those skills across disciplines and contexts. Students participate in project-based learning daily and learn through experiences and service to others.

Academics

At The Legacy Community School, we believe that each and every student deserves an exceptional education that not only prepares them for whichever pathway they choose after high school, but that also supports them in becoming thoughtful, engaged citizens and empathetic humans. At TLCS, students are given the tools and supports to achieve at their greatest potential and to meet all grade level competencies and state standards. They are immersed in a literacy- and numeracy-rich environment and participate daily in hands-on learning. Rather than prioritizing rote memorization, TLCS focuses on supporting students in mastering skills through an interdisciplinary experiential and project-based learning approach. Students receive instruction in short lessons delivered to small groups based on students' prior knowledge, then are given time to practice, master, and apply their new learning. Instead of demonstrating their understanding by earning traditional grades, students are assessed on their mastery of grade-level competencies.

Humanities

Students experience the humanities in an interdisciplinary fashion, where reading, writing, and analytical skills are nurtured in explorations of literature, composition, and social studies through hands-on learning and an emphasis on practical application of those skills. Literacy provides students with access and opportunities, and at TLCS, students experience a literacy-rich environment and are provided with literacy support that is tailored to their individual needs to ensure that all students are confident in their ability to read, comprehend, write, and speak effectively.

STEM

Students experience science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in an interdisciplinary approach that focuses on meaningful connections to the world around them. Through project-based learning, students actively explore concepts by designing, building, and problem-solving rather than memorizing information. Each experience is grounded in real-world relevance, empowering students to think critically, innovate, and apply their knowledge to authentic challenges beyond the classroom.

Students are provided with health and wellness opportunities that move beyond a prescribed curriculum and instead focus on how key health and wellness concepts are applied to their current and future selves. Students learn about both their physical and mental health and wellness, which includes social emotional learning opportunities that are embedded throughout their days.

Passion Hour

Students have time each week to develop their research and critical thinking skills through the pursuit of a topic of their choice. Student choice ensures that students hone skills while also exploring and developing their passions.

Students regularly experience opportunities to explore careers through guest speakers and field trips. They develop the skills needed to pursue the vocation of their choice through experiential learning and community partnerships, and students have the opportunity to get real-world experience within fields of interest through internships, work study, and volunteer work.

Project-Based Learning

Students connect with meaningful learning experiences, and TLCS ensures that students are given the opportunity to support deeper levels of learning in pursuit of finding answers to questions that impact their lives, the community around them, and the world at large. In their quests to find solutions, students synthesize and transfer the skills they learn in their coursework to build a better world, empowering them to put their learning into practice for the greater good.

Experiential Learning

Students learn best by doing, which is why TLCS offers students many opportunities to learn through authentic experiences. When students learn a skill, we aim to provide them with the opportunity to master that skill through practical and experiential application so that they can then transfer that skill to life outside of TLCS.

Students develop empathy and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them through service to others. At TLCS, we prioritize service to the community around us, and all of our students regularly participate in service learning experiences within the community.
