A Word From Our Founder

I hated school. I loved to learn, but school felt like a tiny box that I just was not fitting into; I wante

The Legacy Community School was born from a belief that every single child has genius within them, we just have to honor and nurture it.

What do former students and colleagues have to say?

"Mrs. Daniele is one of the best educators I have had during school. She is always available to chat about whatever. I have gotten some amazing advice from her for personal problems and with my work in school. She is very understanding and flexible for every one of her staff members just as much for her students. Mrs. Daniele has made it possible for me to be excited to work on my assignments. Everyone is lucky to have her!"

"Francesca is an experienced, enthusiastic instructor and leader who thrives on fostering a culture of inclusivity, hands-on learning, and social and emotional health. She tackles challenges with a positive attitude and fearless determination."

Fifteen years ago, I entered the classroom bright-eyed and excited to change the world one student at a time. I had hated my own time in the classroom. I navigated school with the weight of the world on my shoulders; I was angry, bitter, and struggling with my mental health. I was mad at the world and found school to be yet another level of hell; I was bored, bullied relentlessly, and isolated. I am not sure if it was a blessing or a curse, but I was good at learning, and therefore despite my attitude and clear need to find a place where I belonged, I managed to graduate with straight As.

As an English teacher, I prioritized relationships and belonging. I created a classroom where students felt safe, valued, and heard, and my students flourished. I wanted my students to love learning and to feel empowered to take risks, and I realized that none of that was possible if they did not first realize that I valued and respected each and every one of them. My classroom was always loud. My students were rarely sitting in their desks working independently. I strove to provide high level learning while making it hands-on and fun. Unfortunately, there was always a long list of things that made it challenging to maintain that environment, whether it was a required number of tests given each quarter, mandated test preparation, or a plethora of other formulaic and ____ tasks and expectations that detracted from the real learning going on in my classroom.

As a department head, I worked with my teachers to move towards a skills focus rather than a content focus, from memorization towards mastery and practical application. I was fortunate to lead a group of educators who wanted change, and we supported one another in making small changes within a bigger system. I left the classroom two years ago to take on the role as the administrator of an alternative education program; I jumped at the opportunity as one of my life goals, both personally and professionally, has always been to run or build my own program. My time leading this program only reinforced my belief that there was no more waiting to build a program___ . If Covid wasn't the push needed for a true revolution within education, then I wasn't sure anything would really make it happen. I decided that perhaps I can't change a system, but I can build an alternative.
